Frequently asked questions about whale
watching in Tenerife
Where can you see whales in Tenerife?
One of the best areas for whale-watching in Tenerife is on the island’s south coast, particularly in the stretch of sea between Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and the Teno-Rasca marine area. Maxicat runs its excursions from Southern Tenerife, in an area renowned for the regular presence of cetaceans.
Which cetaceans can be seen on the trip?
During the excursion, you may spot pilot whales, dolphins and other marine species that live in or pass through the waters off the south coast of Tenerife. The presence of these animals always depends on nature and sea conditions.
Is it guaranteed that we’ll see whales and dolphins?
Whale watching takes place in the wild, so sightings cannot be guaranteed 100 per cent. However, the southern coast of Tenerife is one of the areas in the Canary Islands with the highest concentration of cetaceans, which increases the chances of seeing them during the trip.
How long does the whale-watching trip last?
The trip lasts approximately 3 hours. During this time, the boat will be underway, we will be searching for and observing cetaceans, a meal will be served on board and, weather permitting, there will be a stop for swimming and snorkelling.
Does the excursion include food and drink?
Yes. The excursion includes a Canarian set menu on board and drinks. There are also options for children and vegan or vegetarian alternatives, provided that dietary requirements are specified during the booking process.
Will there be time to go for a swim during the trip?
Yes. The excursion includes a stop for swimming and snorkelling, weather and sea conditions permitting. The Maxicat team will advise on each trip whether it is safe to go ahead with this activity.
Is the excursion suitable for children?
Yes. The catamaran trip is a great activity for families with children. The sailing, whale-watching and swimming make it an enjoyable experience for the whole family to enjoy whilst on holiday in Tenerife.
Does it include a collection service?
Yes. Maxicat offers a free collection service in various areas of southern Tenerife. When you make your booking, you’ll need to specify your accommodation so that the team can confirm the nearest collection point and the exact time.
Where does the excursion start from?
The excursion departs from Tenerife South. During the booking process, you will be informed of the departure point or, if you are using the pick-up service, the meeting point closest to your accommodation.
What should I take with me on the trip?
We recommend bringing a swimsuit, a towel, sun cream, sunglasses, a cap or hat, and comfortable clothing. In the cooler months, it may also be a good idea to bring a light jumper.
